1. Mosaic of Thought: The strategies in this section have been categorized using the ideas found in Mosaic of Thought: Teaching Comprehension in a Reader's Workshop by Ellin Oliver Keene and Susan Zimmermann(1997).
2. Learning Styles: This Learning Styles framework was adapted from So Each May Learn: Integrating Learning Styles and Multiple Intelligences by Harvey F. Silver, Richard W. Strong and Matthew J. Perini. ASCD (2000), and How to Make Presentations that Teach and Transform by Robert J. Garmston and Bruce M. Wellman. ASCD (1992). This model builds on the learning style theories derived from Jung's model of personality type and Myers applications of it. It is based on the Myers Briggs Type Indicator--used to identify the personality type of an individual.
3. Multiple Intelligences: Dr. Howard Gardner, Professor of Education at Harvard University developed the theory of multiple intelligences in 1983. This theory suggests that the traditional notion of intelligence, based on I.Q. testing, is far too limited. Instead, Dr. Gardner proposes eight different intelligences to account for a broader range of human potential in children and adults.

4. Multiple Intelligences + Learning Styles: In the book So Each May Learn: Integrating Learning Styles and Multiple Intelligences by Harvey F. Silver, Richard W. Strong and Matthew J. Perini. ASCD (2000) the authors advance a model that fills a large need in education--the integration of learning styles theory. For the purposes of this page, the organization and definitions put forward by these authors provide an ideal structure within which to organize the strategies and tools that we use in our classrooms. For a more complete understanding of this relationship please consult the book.
