In 1975 Mr. Steed thought about building a
Skybolt. As
he cogitated, he looked
around for the least expensive place to start something else and bought a
Rocky Mountain (I think) clock kit for about $35. He soldered it
together and stuck on a 9 volt battery and then put it on the shelf for, oh,
25 years. A couple of years back he found it but couldn't find the
manual or schematic. So while back at Oshkosh he stopped at the RMI
booth and asked if they had a manual. Without thinking, though, he had
asked a kid who was younger than the clock. The young man looked
at it in amazement. Then he shouted to the other guys in the booth,
"Hey look what some guy brought in! Does anybody remember one of
these?" It was quite the hit but not in a real helpful-to-us kind
of way. We think we made their day. No manual was forthcoming,
though.
While most of the LEDs still seem to light up on the 25 year old kit, we
weren't real eager to install it. The Flightcom unit will be an
infinitely better installation. We appreciate the Flightcom team's generosity and
willingness to help us out.
