We have an engine!

Due to the generosity of Mr. Mel Ellis and his lovely wife Nita, our project now has an engine.  Mr. Ellis has been a Volkswagon mechanic for 40 years and runs a Volkswagon shop in Hillsboro, Oregon.  He has built a Quickie, an RV-4 which he currently flies, and a CH-701.  When he sold the 701 he retained the engine and has donated it to our project.  It is a Revmaster conversion of 2110 cc

Amazing things continue to happen.  We received a call from a 701 pilot that knew of a possible loose engine.  We called the owner, expressed our interest, explained our program and Mr. Mel Ellis offered to donate the engine to get the 701 airborne.  Apparently it was a Revmaster conversion that had flown in another aircraft.  Mel transferred it to a 701 that he built, then sold the 701 and kept the engine.  Now we will be installing it in the Aeromanufacturing project.

We will need to install, fit, wire, plumb, test, cowl, and safety the installation, which should take some time.  We thought briefly about having our plane in the air by this summer but more realistically we will have it mounted by then.  We will spend this summer and fall solving all the installation problems and hope to have the aircraft ready to fly by January of 2004.  If we can accomplish this we will be in an excellent position to demonstrate our success and visit Oshkosh and Arlington in the summer of 2004.

We have also heard from two other schools thinking of starting aircraft construction projects.  While we certainly don't have all the answers, we are always glad to talk to anyone thinking of a great project like this one.  Different schools have different goals, conditions, personnel, and student bodies.  There are many ways to use the construction of an aircraft to teach essential skills in a school or after school setting.

If you would like to contact us please email Mr. Smith or  Mr. Steed   We would really like to hear from you.
