Mr. Smith and Mr. Ellis discuss the Revmaster VW conversion

Early on Saturday, April 26th, Mr. Smith and Mr. Steed again drove to Hillsboro, Oregon.  Awaiting them were Mr. and Mrs. Ellis and the Revmaster 2110 VW conversion that will be used to get the701 airborne.  Mr. Ellis, a Volkswagon Mechanic and RV-4 pilot, had the engine from a CH-701 that he had previously built and then sold.  Mr. And Mrs. Ellis very generously decided to donate the engine to the CKJH project.

The engine was originally a Revmaster 2110cc VW conversion intended for a Q2 kit.  It flew for years in a Cygnet.  Through trades it came to Mr. Ellis and he installed it in his 701, but retained it when he sold the airframe.  As it had an oil leak he disassembled it, found the leak to be irreparable, and sent a new case to Revmaster to be machined.  He then reassembled it with a forged crankshaft, new rod, main and cam bearings, new piston and cylinder sets, and new valves.

After lengthy discussion, the engine was loaded and secured in Mr. Smith's El Camino.  Thanks were given, goodbyes were said, and the 3.5 hour trip back to Silverdale began.  The engine now resides in the CKJH shop where it will be mated with the 701 airframe and the process of mounting, plumbing, wiring, and intensive ground testing will begin.  We foresee it running this summer or next fall, and actual flight testing beginning early in 2004.  Check back here for updates as they occur.
