Mr. Smith and Mr. Ellis discuss the VW engine

Megan works on fittings for the 601XL wing spar.
Megan and Linda, one of our mentors, drive rivets in the 601XL wing spar.
Occasionally, rivets driven through the spar caps were not set within tolerances and had to be removed.  We had to design a tool that would fit within the flange, support the spar cap, and allow the rivets to be driven through.  A big problem was the 'springiness' of the table.  Enough energy could not be transferred to the rivet.  We solved that by placing the spar and the tool on the concrete floor and driving the rivets there.
Here Linda punches out a mis-set rivet.

Our port wing rivet team could work at Boeing!  Once they got the hang of setting rivets on practice pieces, they were rivet settin' machines!
They cut rivets to size for several thicknesses of web and cap strip, drove and bucked the rivets, and checked the results for the proper sized shop heads.
The rib team had to make 12 ribs for each wing and every rib was a different size and shape.  Since the wing of a CH-601 is not a 'constant chord', the shape changes as you move from the root to the tip.  Even ribs an equal distance out from the fuselage had to be made differently for each wing as the flanges were bent in different directions.
The rib blocks we used were provided by Bill Crib and Bill Crib Jr.  They are two of our mentors who are building CH-601s of their own.
