It's (almost) as good as flying!

Every year on the last session we take the plane outside and assemble it.  Some years we have to dodge the weather, others it has been warm and sunny.  this year it was overcast but warm.

We started out by trundling the fuselage out the back door of the shop.  We had to remove the main gear to get it through the doors.  We set it up in the courtyard and began to assemble our 701.
For purposes of the photographs, most components were merely pinned in place.  We put on the bubble doors, the empennage, the cowling, and the propeller.
We also set the seats in place.
The wings were the most challenging.  They're light, but large, and the fuselage fittings are a tight squeeze.  Many hands, though, make light work, and our group is practiced and focused.
One wing, then the other, and suddenly . . .
We have an airplane that looks like it wants to fly.
It has taken 8 years to get to this point.  It seems like a long time but we remember that almost every part of this airplane and the CH-601 in the shop was constructed from scratch by junior high school students.  At this point what remains is to fit the cowling, wire the engine and instruments, plumb the fuel and hydraulic brakes, and do final paint, assembly, and checks.  Then, of course, we have an entire schedule of engine tests, control tests, final inspections, etc., before we can even think of taking it to the airport.  But that day will come soon enough.  We expect to have this aircraft at the EAA Airventure in 2007.
