CollegeEd™

2006

Introduction

A Post-Secondary Education may seem very far away for your child at this moment, but the decisions that you both make now will have an impact on whether or not your child attempts a post-secondary education and the type of educational establishment he or she can attend.

Although the class is entitled CollegeEdä and the emphasis for the most part is for students to consider college, I prefer the use of the term “post-secondary education”. I believe that other forms of  post-secondary education such as the military or trade-schools are important career choices which should not be overlooked. You will see many homework assignments that will have college as the main focus. That is the nature of this course and to modify every homework assignment and hand-out to include the words “post-secondary education” will take many long hours and will be a waste of paper due to all the photo-copying that would occur.

This class will also include material from “Youth Matters” (personal responsibility and refusal schools) and iSafe (keeping your child safe in Cyberspace)  – Charles Platten– Charles Platten

Objectives

·         To encourage the student to think about their future, explore careers and become aware of the importance of the classes he or she will take in school as they relate to a post-secondary education.

·          To inform you, the student’s family, about the post-secondary application and decision-making processes. Whether you are very familiar with the this process or not, this class will help you talk about these various options with your child.

Rationale

You may wonder why a course on post-secondary education is being taught in junior high school. The College Board has chose to implement CollegeEd™ in seventh grade to reach students before the choices they make place them out of the post-secondary education track in high school.

Students make choices about eighth grade classes while in seventh grade (either directly, through their performance in seventh grade classes, or by taking tests that determine the classes into which they will be placed). It is important for a student who dreams of further education to take those classes which will be necessary for that education. Too many students are not given this critical information until late in their high school careers. By then, it may be too late for them to have the complete range of post-secondary education options.

The CollegeEd™ classes are interactive and fun. Each lesson includes homework assignments for your child to complete either alone or with your help. The fifth period class meets from 12:05 to 1:00 p.m. M-W and F and 10:50 to 11:50 on Thursdays. Please refer to Mr. Platten’s CollegeEd™ web-site for more specific information on the dates of those presentations for your child.

Students Rights and Responsibilities

Students are asked to abide by the Central Kitsap School District Student Rights and Responsibilities code which is provided for each student at the beginning of the year. Your child is expected to follow these basic principals:

Respect for Self

·         I will always do my best

·         I will positively participate in all classroom activities

·         I will bring my materials to class each day

·         I will attend to personal needs during the passing period

Respect for Others

·         I will stay on task without disturbing or distracting others

·         I will not use ‘put downs’ or harass others

·         I will respect other people’s differences and opinions

Respect for School

Grading Procedure

Motivation for the CollegeEd™ course at CKJH should not revolve around letter grades, rather the desire to be the best student one can be: to participate in the rewarding experience of learning and the gratification of excellence in the completion of the course.
